CNN —Blizzard conditions continued to slam Northern California over the weekend with damaging winds and heavy snow dumping on mountain ridges down to the valleys. The most extreme conditions are unfolding at the highest elevations in the mountains, with whiteout conditions and hurricane-force winds. The weather service has warned of “high to extreme” avalanche danger through Sunday afternoon in the Central Sierra and Greater Lake Tahoe area. “Expect snowy conditions throughout the park,” park officials said. A blizzard warning remains in effect for the park area until 7 p.m. on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Hanford, California.

A Boeing 737 Max 8 airplane of China Southern Airlines lands at Wuhan Tianhe International Airport as the Boeing 737 Max returns to passenger flying in China after a hiatus of nearly four years on January 13, 2023 in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China. It represents a vote of confidence for the planemaker during a difficult period for Boeing following a Jan. 5 mid-air cabin blowout during a full flight. Chinese imports of the MAX have been suspended since it was grounded worldwide in 2019 following two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. Safety bans have been lifted with existing MAX already flying inside China, but new deliveries had remained on hold. Boeing has faced increased scrutiny following the Jan. 5 mid-air incident on an Alaska Airlines flight.

The ruling issued Wednesday by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington comes three weeks after it blocked the ban. Apple is still trying to persuade the federal appeals court to overturn the ITC's ruling, but Wednesday's decision means the company is no longer insulated from the U.S. sales ban. The Cupertino, California, company also could negotiate a settlement with Masimo that would clear the way for it to continue selling the Apple Watch models with the blood-oxygen sensor. Having to pull its two top Apple Watches from the U.S. would put a small dent in the company's annual sales of $383 billion. Although the company doesn't disclose the volume of Apple Watch sales, analyst estimate the product accounts for about $18 billion in annual revenue.

A Tesla logo is seen outside a showroom of the carmaker in Beijing, China May 31, 2023. The jury trial, in a California state court, featured testimony from one Tesla employee about Autopilot that the company repeatedly asked to be kept hidden from the public. The lawsuit, filed against Tesla by the passengers, accuses the company of knowing that Autopilot and other safety systems were defective when it sold the car. The electric-vehicle maker also claims it was unclear whether Autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash. But plaintiff lawyers cited testimony from Tesla engineer Eloy Rubio Blanco, who acknowledged during the trial that Tesla understood software on the car could have latent defects.

A third straight day of marathon negotiations between Hollywood studios and striking screenwriters ended on Friday night without a deal. But the sides made substantial progress, according to three people briefed on the talks. The sides plan to reconvene on Saturday. For the third day in a row, several Hollywood moguls directly participated in the negotiations, which ended a little after 8 p.m.Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive; Donna Langley, NBCUniversal’s chief content officer of Universal Pictures; Ted Sarandos, co-chief executive of Netflix; and David Zaslav, the chief executive of Warner Bros. During the Thursday negotiations, the sides had narrowed their differences, for instance, on the topic of minimum staffing for television show writers’ rooms, a point that studios had been unwilling to engage on before the guild called a strike in early May.

In its appeal, the FTC said Corley's order allowing Microsoft to move ahead with the deal incorrectly held the agency to a legal standard that was too high. Some legal experts said the FTC had made a compelling argument, but also said there was no certainty for success. Antitrust scholar Sean Sullivan, who teaches at University of Iowa's law school, said an appeals court can modify or throw out a lower court opinion based on "errors of law." The appeals court is expected to move quickly. The appeals court "may be less than sympathetic with the argument it needs to hurry up and do something when the blame for the emergency lies entirely with the FTC," Ross said.

UK-filmed TV shows could go ahead despite SAG strike

London CNN —As a host of Hollywood actors join film and TV writers in a strike against major studios and streaming services, filming and production of some popular shows – including “House of the Dragon” and “Industry” – could continue, due to UK strike laws. A source with knowledge of the productions confirmed to CNN that both are Equity contract shows. Actors are calling for increased pay as well as progress on residuals paid for when films or shows are shown again, particularly on streaming services. They join 11,000 members of the Writers Guild of America, who have been on strike for two months. Production of many movies and television shows has already been shut down by the current writers’ strike, and the actors’ strike threatens to bring most remaining productions to a halt, other than on some independent films not associated with studios.
